Samuel Yates was born on 1 November 1831 at Stockport in Cheshire, the son of George Yates 1804-1879 and his wife née Anne Carrington 1814-1884. He became a seed merchant in Manchester.

On 21 December 1858 he married Mary McMullen 1832-1890 at South Hackney in London. She was born in 1814 at Camberwell in London, daughter of William George McMullen, of Hurst & Sons, seed merchants.
Their children were:
Harry Yates. He was born on 12 December 1859 at Stretford in Manchester. In 1904 he married Margaret Gertrude Smith 1873-1953, and they had three sons. He died on 10 March 1941 at The Headlands, West Didsbury in Manchester aged 81 years. Probate of his Will was granted on 23 July 1941 to his widow and sons Samuel Yates and Harry Yates (1).
Arthur Yates. He was born on 10 May 1861 at Stretford in Manchester. On 13 November 1888 he married Caroline Mary Davies 1867-1916 at Wellington in Shropshire. They emigrated to Australia, and lived in a house named Didsbury in Shaftesbury Road, Burwood, a suburb of Sydney. Arthur Yates died there on 30 July 1926. His wife had predeceased him in 1918.
Ellen Yates. She was born on 21 September 1863 at Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester. She was married to William Dixon 1867-1945, and died in 1946.
William George Yates. He was born on 21 September 1863 at Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester. He married Lizzie Carrington Smith 1866-1942, and died in 1891.
Ernest Yates. He was born on 26 February 1866. On 23 November 1892 at Osmaston church near Ashbourne in Derbyshire he married Mary Elizabeth Wright (2). She was born on 13 December 1870, the daughter of Frank Wright 1842-1913 and sister of Edith Wright who was married to Percy Yates. In 1887 Ernest Yates and his wife emigrated to New Zealand to join the business that his brother Arthur Yates had created. Arthur Yates moved to Sydney, and Ernest Yates managed the New Zealand business.
Mary Yates 1870-1924. She was born on 31 October 1870 at Didsbury in Manchester. On 12 November 1901 she was married to Samuel Abell 1869-1921, and died on 18 March 1921 at Hale in Cheshire.
Percy Yates. He was born on 1 January 1873 at Didsbury in Manchester. He married Edith Wright. She was born on 26 March 1872, the daughter of Frank Wright 1842-1913 and sister of Mary Elizabeth Wright who was married to Ernest Yates. Edith Yates née Wright died on 28 July 1958, and was buried at at Osmaston near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Percy Yates died in 1936.
Harriet Ada Yates. She was born on 26 August 1874, and died on 30 August in the same year.
Their father Samuel Yates died on 24 April 1901 at his home The Headlands in Didsbury, Manchester.
Probate of his Will was granted on 9 September 1901 to his sons Harry Yates and Percy Yates and to Frank Thomas Wright who was the brother of his daughters-in-law Mary Elizabeth Yates née Wright and Edith Yates née Wright (3).
