She was born on 19 January 1850 at Simla in India, the daughter of General Hugh Rose and his wife nee Anna Maria Short. She was the sister of Annie Charlotte Rose who was married to his brother James Bird Hutchinson on 18 November 1869.

They had the following children:

Evelyn Isobel Rose Hutchinson. She was born in 1869 at Poona in India. She was married to Sir Walter Hughes in 1889 (1).
