Joseph Gould 1905-1985

Joseph Gould was born on 9 December 1874 at Grindon in Staffordshire, the son of William Smith Gould and his wife née Rachel Smith.

In 1895 he married widowed Ellen Redfern of Mootlow farm near Alsop-en-le-Dale, for whom he had been working. She was born Ellen Bailey at Endon in Staffordshire in 1865, the daughter of James and Mary Bailey. She was married to Francis John Redfern of Mootlow in 1887, and they had the following children:

Ethel Redfern. She was born in 1888.
Frank Redfern. He was born in 1892.

Francis John Redfern died in 1893 aged 39, and his widow married Joseph Gould in 1895.

Joseph and Ellen Gould had the following children:

Elsie Gould. She was born in 1896. She was married to Samuel Hambleton 1911-1977 of Sycamore Farm in Milldale in 1932, and they had a son Samuel Hambleton 1934-2005. She died on 8 July 1967 aged 71 years. Her husband Samuel Hambleton died on 8 September 1977 aged 68 years. They were buried at Alstonefield, where there is a memorial gravestone.

John Gould. Died in infancy.

Mary Gould. Died in infancy.

George Gould. He was born in 1900. He married his cousin Annie May Bailey in 1932. She was the daughter of William Bailey of Alstonefield and his wife Annie Susannah. They had a son also named George Gould.

Edith Gould. She died in infancy.

James William Gould. He was born on 19 August 1903, and baptised at Alstonefield Methodist Chapel on 10 November 1903 . He was unmarried and farmed at Hanson Grange with his brother Joseph Gould. He died in 1972.

Joseph Gould. He was born on 24 February 1905, and baptised on 5 May 1905 at Alstonefield Methodist Chapel. He was unmarried and farmed at Hanson Grange with his brother James William Gould. He died in 1985.

Their mother Ellen Gould died on 10 January 1926 aged 61 years. Their father Joseph Gould died in 1941 aged 66 years.
