Mary Gould was born on 26 September 1862 at Grindon in Staffordshire, the daughter of William Smith Gould and his wife née Rachel Smith. She was baptised at Grindon on 26 October 1862.

In 1881 she was working as a domestic servant for John Hand, farmer in Tissington, Derbyshire. Also working there was Matthew Millward, an indoor farm servant, whom Mary Gould was to marry during the following year.

Matthew Millward was born in 1856 at Shawfield, Longnor in Staffordshire. In the Census Return for 1891 he was recorded as being a farm labourer, in that of 1901 as a District Road Man, and in that of 1911 as a general labourer.

They lived at Rectory Cottage in Grindon, and had the following children:

Ann Ellen Millward. She was born in 1883 and died on 6 August 1901 aged 12 years. She was buried at Grindon, where there is a memorial gravestone.

Mary Hannah Millward. She was born in 1884. In 1908 she was married to William Henry Cheshire, but was widowed in the following year. She had a son who died young.

Matthew Millward. He was born in 1897. He died unmarried on 28 May 1911 aged 24 years, and was buried at Grindon where there is a memorial gravestone.

Ada Millward. She was born in 1890. She died young.

Albert Millward. He was born in 1893. He married Mary Millward, and lived at Glossop in Derbyshire.

Susan Millward. She was born in 1896. She was married to George Gibbs of Wetton.

Thomas James Millward. He was born in 1905 and died in the same year.

Bertha Millward. She was born in 1907. She was unmarried and lived at Rectory Cottage in Grindon.

Their father Matthew Millward died at Grindon on 1 January 1921 aged 65 years.
Mary Millward died on 5 January 1946 aged 83 years.
They were buried at Grindon, where there is a memorial gravestone.
