Ellen Bailey was born at Endon in Staffordshire in 1864, the daughter of James Bailey 1833-1913 by his first wife nee Mary Moss 1840-1864.

Her father, born at Norton-in-the-Moors in Staffordshire in 1833, farmed at Dunwood Dales in Longsden and later at Meghole farm in Heaton, both places being in Staffordshire. He remarried after the death of his first wife Mary Moss in 1864. His second wife Hannah Knight was born at Endon in Staffordshire in 1852. James Bailey and his family moved from the Endon area in the early 1880s to farm at Upper Hanson (New Hanson Grange), where the youngest children were born.

Ellen Bailey was married in 1887 to Francis John Redfern at Alstonefield Wesleyan Chapel. He was born in 1854 at Mootlow farm near Alsop-en-le-Dale, the son of Joseph Redfern (born at Tissington in 1825) and his wife nee Rachael Mould (born in Milldale in 1819). Rachael Bailey died in 1863 aged 44 years, and Joseph Redfern married Hannah Austin in 1864.

Francis John and Ellen Redfern had the following children:

Ethel Redfern. She was born in 1888.
Frank Redfern. He was born in 1892.

When the 1891 Census was taken, her husband was farming at Mootlow, but Ellen (with their young daughter Ethel) was visiting her brother John Bailey and his family, farming at Fir Trees, Primrose Hill, Rushton Spencer near Leek in Staffordshire.

Francis John Redfern died in 1893 aged 39, and Ellen Redfern was married to Joseph Gould in 1895.

Joseph Gould was born on 9 December 1874 at Grindon in Staffordshire, the son of William Smith Gould and his wife née Rachel Smith. He died in 1941 aged 66 years.

Joseph and Ellen Gould had the following children:

Elsie Gould. She was born in 1896. She was married to Samuel Hambleton of Sycamore Farm in Milldale in 1932, and they had a son also named Samuel Hambleton. She died on 8 July 1967 aged 71 years. Her husband Samuel Hambleton died on 8 September 1967 aged 68 years. They were buried at Alstonefield, where there is a memorial gravestone.

John Gould. Died in infancy.

Mary Gould. Died in infancy.

George Gould. He was born in 1900. He married his cousin Annie May Bailey in 1932. She was the daughter of William Bailey 1873-1920 of Alstonefield (sister of his mother) and his wife Annie Susannah. They had a son also named George Gould.

Edith Gould. She died in infancy.

James William Gould. He was born in 1904. He was unmarried and farmed at Hanson Grange with his brother Joseph Gould.

Joseph Gould. He was born in 1905. He was unmarried and farmed at Hanson Grange with his brother James Gould.

Their mother Ellen Gould died in 1926 aged 61 years.
