Thomas Hollis was born in Rotherham in 1602. He died in 1664 (modern reckoning) and was buried there on 4 February in that year. His Will was proved at York on 24 March 1664, administration being granted to his widow.

He was twice married. His first wife was Ellen Ramsker 1606-1640, sister of John Ramsker, a Sheffield cutler who minted the first Sheffield trade tokens in 1655. Thomas Hollis and Ellen Ramsker were married at Rotherham on 28 June 1632. Ellen Ramsker died in 1640.

His grandson Thomas Hollis 1659-1731, son of his son Thomas Hollis 1634-1718, became a major benefactor of Harvard College, later Harvard University, in the United States of America.

By his second wife Mary, Thomas Hollis 1602-1664 had a son John Hollis, who was baptised at Rotherham on 7 May 1648, a daughter Hannah Hollis, and a daughter Mary Hollis, who married William Gould 1655-1725 of Pilsbury Grange.
