William Smith was born at Butterton in 1759, the son of William and Mary Smith.

He married Jane Redfern 1769-1828 at Butterton on 2 June 1788, and they had the following children, all baptised at Butterton:

William Smith. He was baptised on 5 July 1789, and was buried there on 28 June 1812.

Thomas Smith. He was born in 1790 and died in 1852. He was baptised on 3 October 1790. (He was also called William Thomas Smith, perhaps after his elder brother William died in 1812, and is so named on his gravestone.) He lived at Town End in Butterton with his unmarried brother Moses Smith, a stonemason. He died on 9 September 1852 at Blakelow in Butterton aged 61 years.

Matthew Smith. He was baptised on 25 November 1792.

Anne Smith. She was baptised on 29 March 1795. She was married to John Gould 1793-1872 and they had eight children. She died in 1834 and was buried at Butterton on 20 March 1834.

Mary Smith. She was baptised on 28 February 1798. She married Mr Ferns (forename unknown). In 1851 she was a widow, a washerwoman living in Middle Town, Butterton with a son John Ferns aged 11. She was living there alone in 1871. She died on 7 March 1873 aged 75 and was buried at Butterton in the same grave as her brother (William) Thomas Smith.

Dorothy Smith. She was baptised on 3 May 1801.

George Smith. He was born in 1805 and died in 1891. He married Ann Horobin 1809-1897, and they had eight children.

Moses Smith 1811-1884. He was baptised on 24 March 1811. He was unmarried, and lived at Town End in Butterton with his brother (William) Thomas Smith. He died on 24 February 1884 aged 73 and was buried at Butterton.

Their father William Smith died on 19 March 1829 aged 70 years. His wife had predeceased him on 12 January 1828. They were buried at Butterton, where there is a particularly fine memorial gravestone designed and carved by their son Moses Smith.
