John Gould was born in 1793 at Grindon in Staffordshire, the son of Joseph Gould 1757-1819 and his wife Mary Chadwick. He was baptised on 24 July 1793 at Grindon.

On 31 December 1818 at Mayfield in Staffordshire John Gould married his first cousin Anne Smith, the daughter of William Smith 1759-1829 and his wife nee Jane Redfern 1769-1828 of Butterton.

Their children, all baptised at Grindon, were as follows:

Anne Gould. She was born in 1819, and baptised on 8 October 1819.

John Gould. He was born in 1822, and baptised on 12 May 1822.

Mary Gould. She was born in 1823, and baptised on 31 August 1823.

Ellen Gould. She was born in 1830, and baptised on 30 May 1832. She was known as Nelly. She married Thomas Lowndes in 1860 and they had a daughter Ellen Lowndes born in 1861 and a son John Thomas Lowndes born in 1869.

Their mother Anne Gould nee Smith died in 1834 and was buried at Butterton on 20 March 1834.

When the Census was taken in 1841, John Gould was recorded as being a farmer in Grindon living with his son William Gould and daughter Mary Gould. In 1851 John Gould was farming eleven acres at Grindon and employing no labour. With him were his son John and daughter Ellen.

By 1861 he was farming only five acres at "Grindon Town" assisted by his son John Gould; keeping house for him was his granddaughter Ann Gould; and his married daughter Ellen Lowndes and her daughter Ellen Lowndes were also with him. In 1871 he was a cottager living at "Bottom of Town" in Grindon having three acres, and with him was his daughter then Ellen Lowndes, a corset maker, and her children Ellen and John Lowndes.

John Gould died in 1872 aged 78 years.
