Thomas Bateman was born in 1646 at Hartington in Derbyshire, and baptised there on 2 August 1646. He was the son of Richard Bateman who died in 1671 and his wife Anne Mason, the widow of Robert Harrison of Hartington. That Richard Bateman descended through six generations from another Richard Bateman of living in Hartington in the fifteenth century (1).

On 6 August 1672 Thomas Bateman married Guarterick Cokaine, and had the following children:

Richard Bateman 1677-1761. He was baptised at Hartington on 4 April 1677. He was twice married, his second wife being Sarah Gould 1689-1772, the daughter of William Gould of Pilsbury Grange and his wife nee Mary Hollis.

Mary Bateman 1673-1680. She was baptised at Hartington on 17 February 1673, and buried there on 20 April 1680.

Elizabeth Bateman 1675-1731. She was baptised at Hartington on 25 March 1675. She was married to Ralph Sterndale 1721-1796 on 23 April 1697. She died in 1731, and was buried at Hartington on 5 December 1731.

Guaterick Bateman died in 1677, and was buried at Hartington on 10 June 1677.

On 22 June 1683 Thomas Bateman married Mary Sleigh, the daughter of James Sleigh of Hartington, yeoman (2). She was baptised at Hartington on 28 December 1659, and they had the following children:

Mary Bateman 1683-1691. She was baptised at Hartington on 28 November 1683, and was buried there on 23 January 1691.

Sarah Bateman 1684-1750. She was married on 30 May 1710 to the Reverend Thomas Jackson, the vicar of Hartington. They had a family, and she died at Hartington on 23 January 1750.

Katherine Bateman 1686-1752. She was married on 4 September 1711 to Thomas Fern, yeoman, of Heathcote near Hartington. They had a family, and she died in 1752.

Anne Bateman born 1689-1760. She was twice married, first to Samuel Milward of Hartington, yeoman, on 21 April 1710, by whom she had a posthumous son, and secondly to Robert Alsope of Hartington on 29 December 1713. She died in 1760, and was buried at Hartington.

Thomas Bateman made his Will on 21 March 1712. He died in 1713, and was buried at Hartington.
