His life and books
Nat Gould's books were first published in London in 1891 by George Routledge & Sons Ltd. That firm published nine books altogether while Nat Gould was living in Sydney. They are The Double Event (1891), Jockey Jack (1892), Running it off, or Hard Hit (1892), Banker and Broker (1893), Harry Dale’s Jockey (1893), Thrown Away, or Basil Ray’s Mistake (1894), Stuck Up (1894), On and Off the Turf in Australia (1895) and Only a Commoner (1895).
John Long issued Nat Gould novels in various series. “John Long’s World Famous Novels” priced at 6d included A Reckless Owner (first published in 1909) and A Chestnut Champion (first published in 1920), as numbers 11 and 51 respectively. Many were published at the selling price of threepence.
Covers were brought up-to-date in subsequent editions. During the 1920s and 1930s the cover pictures followed the dress fashions of the day.
In 1900 his books began to be published by R.A. Everett & Co.
Then came another change of publisher. Writing in his autobiography published in January 1909, Nat states that “I came into contact with my present publisher, Mr. John Long, about five or six years ago”, which would make the date of their meeting 1902 or 1903.
In 1920 George Heath Robinson and J. Weedon Birch launched a company based in London called G.H. Robinson and J. Birch which reprinted over a dozen of the early novels.
