Mary Hambleton 1854-1928

Milldale village

Mary Hambleton was born in 1854 at Milldale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the daughter of Samuel Hambleton and his wife nee Rachel Beresford.

When the 1871 Census was taken she was an unemployed domestic servant living at home.

By 1881 she was working as a dairy maid for Henry Hodgkinson at Steeple House farm at Ilam in Staffordshire.

In 1888 she was married to James Austin. He was born in 1836 at Hartington in Derbyshire.

They lived in Milldale. They had no children, but her husband had a daughter Sarah Hannah Austin 1885-1950 by a previous marriage to Mary Beresford 1842-1879. She was born at Stanshope in Alstonefield parish.

James Austin died in 1903 aged 67 years.

In 1911 widowed Mary Austin was living in Milldale, and working as a charwoman. With her was her unmarried niece Lillie Hambleton, a domestic servant aged 40.

Mary Austin died in 1928 aged 75 years.
