John Edward Henry Hinde was born on 28 October 1847 at Poona in India, the eldest son of Major General John Hinde CB and his wife nee Frances Gould, younger daughter of Richard Gould 1792-1868 and his wife nee Susan Bateman.
He was educated at Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.
He joined the 28th Regiment in 1867, and was appointed a captain in the 34th Regiment of Foot in 1880. He commanded the 1st Border Regiment from 1895 to 1900, served in the South African campaign in 1899.
He commanded the 10th Regimental District from 1901 to 1905.He attained the rank of Colonel and was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath.
In 1873 he had married Laura Hemsworth, the daughter of A.B. Hemsworth of Bacton in Suffolk.
in 1907 they were living in retirement at St. Margaret's, Herringfleet, Lowestoft in Suffolk (1).
