Charles William Hinde was born on 28 October 1847 at Harrackee in India, the second son of Major General John Hinde CB and his wife nee Frances Gould, younger daughter of Richard Gould 1792-1868 and his wife nee Susan Bateman.

He was educated at Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

He served in the 83rd Regiment of Foot, and transferred to the Bombay Staff Corps in 1871. He was made a Lieutenant and while holding the appointment as adjutant in the 1st Bombay Grenadiers, he was killed in action on 27 July 1880 at the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan (1).

In Powick church in Worcesterhire there is a memorial tablet reading as follows:
"In loving memory of Lt. & Adjt. Charles William Hinde, 1st Bombay Grenadiers, second son of Major Genl. Hinde, C.B. & Frances his wife, who was killed in action at Maiwand, Afghanistan on the 27th July 1880, in the 31st year of his age. He died as he had always lived, in the faithful execution of his duty."
