John Egerton was born in 1724, the son of Charles Egerton 1686-1747 and his wife nee Sarah Stebbing.

His father was a London merchant and freeman of the Haberdashers' Company.

He was also a merchant, living at Friday Street in the City of London, and on 6 December 1745 he was made a freeman of the Haberdashers' Company by his father (1).

Among preferments in the gift of the Company was that of preacher or lecturer at Bunbury in Cheshire, to which his son John Egerton 1763-1847 was appointed, and was in turn succeeded there by his grandson John Egerton 1796-1876 (2).

In 1758 John Egerton 1724-1789 married Ann Abigail Chandler.

He remarried on 30 August 1743, his second wife being "the widow Brettel" (3). They had the following children:

John Egerton. He was born on 28 April 1763. He was unmarried, and died on 29 April 1847 at Chester.

Charles Egerton. He was born in 1765. He married Mary Coker, and died at Kendal Lodge, Epping in Essex in 1845 aged 80 years (4).

John Egerton 1724-1789 was recorded in 1781 and 1782 as residing at Hadley in Middlesex, where he owned substantial property (5).

He died on 26 March 1789 and was buried at Hadley (6).
