The Reverend John Champion MA was born in 1802, the son of John Champion of Edale in Derbyshire and his wife nee Frances Beresford. He was baptised on 6 July 1802 at Edale.

After attending Oakham School in Rutland, he entered Clare College in Cambridge on 8 November 1821. He graduated BA in 1826 and was ordained deacon at Lichfield Cathedral in that year and priest in 1827. He graduated MA in 1829. He was Curate of Edale from 1827 to 1845 and Vicar there from 1867 to 1872. He was also Rector of Taxal from 1842 to 1853 (1).

On 12 September 1844 he married Margaret Elizabeth Murray, born in Scotland the daughter of William Murray of Duncrievie in Kinross, Scotland.

They had the following children:

Mary Beresford Champion. She was born in 1846 at Taxal in Cheshire (now in Derbyshire).

Anne Champion. She was born in 1848 at Taxal.

John Murray Champion. He was born in 1849 at Taxal.

William Needham Longden Champion. He was born on 22 May 1850 at Taxal.

Francis Beresford Champion. He was born on 31 January 1854 at Duncrievie in Kinross, Scotland. He married Annie Maud Aldrich on 4 June 1882 at Edale. He died on 4 June 1931.

Andrew Murray Champion. He was born in 1848 at Edale.

Margaret Champion. She was born in 1858 at Edale.

Jessie Champion. She was born in 1860 at Edale.

Alice Jane Champion. She was born in 1862 at Edale, and baptised there on 1 January 1862.

Robert Needham Champion. He was born in 1863 at Edale, and baptised there on 22 April 1863.

Kate Champion. She was born in 1866 at Edale, and baptised there on 3 December 1865.

Rosamond Champion. She was born in 1869 at Edale, and baptised there on 14 March 1869.

Martha Helen Champion. She was born in 1871 at Edale, and baptised there on 12 April 1871. She died on 5 January 1943 at Edale, the last surviving child of the Reverend John Champion (2).
