James Winthrop Anderson was born on 29 August 1851 at Felsham Rectory in Suffolk (1), the son of the Reverend James Richard Anderson 1824-1872 Rector of Barningham Winter and his wife née Elizabeth Julia Pellew 1827-1890. He was educated at the King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds.

In 1872 he emigrated to New Zealand with his brother William Donald Anderson, where they became farmers.

On 20 October 1880 he married Margaret Montgomerie 1862-1914, the second daughter of Captain Alexander Montgomerie of Annick Lodge, Ayrshire in Scotland and of Eaglesham, Wanganui in New Zealand and his wife née Elizabeth Wright. She was the sister of Bettie Montgomerie who became the wife of his brother William Donald Anderson (2).

They had the following children:

James Richard Anderson. He was born on 24 Aug 1881 in Wanganui, New Zealand. He was educated from 1894 to 1898 at Wanganui Collegiate School and from 1904 to 1905 at the College of St John the Evangelist in Auckland. He went to England and studied at Selwyn College in Cambridge, graduating Bachelor of Arts in 1909, and at Wells Theological College in 1910. He was ordained deacon on 25 September 1910 at Wakefield cathedral in Yorkshire and priested there on 24 September 1911. He was assistant curate at Holy Trinity church, Halifax in Yorkshire from 1910 until 1912. On returning to New Zealand he served as Vicar of Ohakune in Wellington diocese from 1913 to 1914. He was granted sick leave in 1914, and retired on 13 July 1927 and became a poultry farmer and breeder at Te Puke. He was granted permission to officiate in the diocese of Waiapu, but ill health forced him to reliquish church duties. He died on 11 November 1955 (3).

Helen Margaret Anderson. She was born in 1883. In 1910 she was married to George Le Heup Marshall 1875-1965. She died in 1971.

Ethel Montgomerie Anderson. She was born in 1886. In 1916 she was married to George Palmer. She died in 1963.

Hugh Alexander Anderson. He was born on 21 July 1887, and died on 21 April 1969.

Gladys Minna Anderson. She was born in 1890, and died in 1972.

Their mother Margaret Anderson nee Montgomerie died in 1914.

In 1919 James Winthrop Anderson married Freda Bagnall. She was born on 21 September 1886 at Turewa, Thames in New Zealand. She was the daughter of Albert Edward Bagnall 1848-1910, saw miller, and his wife nee Emma Brent.

James Winthrop Mills died on 2 December 1927 in New Zealand aged 73 years.

His widow Freda Anderson nee Bagnall died on 2 January 1966 aged 79 years, and was buried at Purewa.
