Grace Spencer was born in about 1694, the daughter of Henry Spencer of Hole House in Ashleyhay near Wirksworth in Derbyshire and his wife nee Anne Newton.

On 29 January 1721 she was married to Ralph Johnson 1672-1755 at Parwich in Derbyshire. He was born about 1672. He died on 21 February 1755, and was buried on 26 February 1755 at Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire.

Grace Johnson died on 29 April 1772, and was buried at Alsop-en-le-Dale.

Ralph and Grace Johnson had the following children:

Francis Johnson 1723-1811. He was baptised on 20 May 1723 at Parwich. He died on 19 January 1811 at Tissington in Derbyshire, and was buried at Alsop-en-le-Dale. He married Mary Odingsells-Leake, the daughter of John Odingsells-Leake and his wife Elizabeth. Mary was born in about 1703. She died on 1 June 1763, and was buried at Alsop-en-le-Dale.

Mary Johnson 1727-1798. She was baptised on 13 April 1727, and died on 21 February 1798. She was married to Edmund Buxton Goodwin 1720-1777.


There is a slate tablet on the south wall of Alsop-en-le-Dale church reading as follows:

"Underneath interr`d the
Body of Ralph Johnson,
Of Parwich in this County,
Gentleman and Grace his wife,
The daughter of Henry SPENCER,
of Hole House in the same County, Esq.
He died on 21 February 1755 aged 83 years
She died 29 April 1772, 78
Also interred the body of Mary Johnson,
daughter of John ODINGSELLS-LEEKE,
of Tipperston [[EPPERSTONE] in the County of Nottingham,
Esq, who maried Francis JOHNSON Esq,
son of the before named Ralph Johnson,
and departed this life 1st June 1763 aged 60
Also interred the body of the before named
Francis JOHNSON who departed this life
without a brother or issue, 19 January 1811, aged 87
He had an only sister, Mrs Mary GOODWIN,
late of Tissington, whom he survived."
