Goodwin Greensmith was born at Thorpe in Derbyshire in 1857, the son of Francis Richard Greensmith 1816-1888 and his wife nee Ann Long.

In 1886 he married Bertha Greaves Poyzer in Liverpool. She was born in Ashbourne in 1866. They had two daughters, both born in Thorpe, Florence Beatrice Greensmith born in 1887 and Dorothy B. Greensmith born in 1888.

He was a farmer at Old House Farm, Bradley Orchard in Thorpe in 1891. (Included then in his household was a domestic servant Hannah Askey aged 20 born at Milldale near Alstonefield in Staffordshire.)

By 1911 he was a Traveller in the coal and grain trade living in lodgings in Ashbourne, and his wife was a servant living in a hotel in Ashbourne.

In 1911 Florence was an Assistant Book Keeper living in at the Imperial Hotel in Meyrick Road, Bournemouth. Dorothy was then a barmaid living in at the St James's Hotel in the Market Place, Derby.

Goodwin Greensmith died in Bristol in 1923 aged 65 years.
