Wetton village

George Beardmore was born at Kingsley in Staffordshire in 1778, the son of Ralph Beardmore 1751-1826 of Kingsley and his wife née Mary Ann Beardmore 1751-1827. He was baptised there on 3 May 1778.

He became a master blacksmith and was also a farmer. When the Census was taken in 1851 he was farming 25 acres at Wetton in Staffordshire, as well as being a blacksmith employing one journeyman (1).

He had married Elizabeth Elliot at Wetton on 6 February 1803. She was born in Alstonefield.

They had the following children:

John Beardmore. He was born in 1804, and baptised at Alstonefield on 5 February 1804. He married Mary Gibbs 1803-1879 at Alstonefield on 3 January 1839. She was the daughter of James Gibbs. They lived at the Load Farm in Alstonefield (2). John Beardmore died on 19 January 1892 aged 87 years, and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife who died on 18 February 1879 aged 76 years.

Ralph Beardmore 1806-1880. He was born in 1806, and was baptised on 21 December 1806 at Wetton. He was four times married, and died on 17 July 1880 at Peak Forest in Derbyshire.

Mary Beardmore. She was born in 1809, and was baptised at Wetton on 12 March 1809. She was married to William Bunting of Kingsley, and died on 4 September 1892.

Elizabeth Beardmore. She was born in 1811, and was baptised at Wetton on 1 December 1811. She was married in 1838 to Ralph Wooddisse 1807-1850. She died on 5 May 1890, and was buried with her husband at Alstonefield, where there is a monumental inscription to their memory.

Ann Beardmore. She was born in 1814, and was baptised at Wetton on 31 July 1814. She was married to John Barker of Kingsley.

Hannah Beardmore. She was born in 1816, and was baptised at Wetton on 10 November 1816.

Thomas Beardmore. He was born in 1819, and was baptised at Wetton on 22 August 1819. When the Census was taken in 1851 he was unmarried aged 30 years working on the family farm in Wetton.

George Beardmore. He was born in 1823, and was baptised at Wetton on 20 October 1823. He farmed at Cronkstone Grange in Derbyshire. On 12 August 1844 he married Jane Gregory at Youlgreave in Derbyshire. He was then living at Ballidon in Derbyshire. They had ten children of whom the eldest was a daughter Ann Elizabeth Beardmore 1845-1853 who died on 6 November 1853 aged eight years, and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a memorial gravestone to her memory.

Their father George Beardmore died on 11 August 1859 at Wetton, and was buried on 15 August 1859 at Alstonefield. His Will was proved on 9 August 1880 (3).

His wife Elizabeth Beardmore née Elliot died on 22 May 1870 at Wetton aged 88 years (4).

The picture of Wetton is a pen and ink drawing made in 1836 by Thomas Peploe Wood, and that of Wetton church made in 1839 was probably also drawn by him.
