Ellen Bennington Gould was born on 20 November 1878 at Grove Cottage, Grindon in Staffordshire, the daughter of William Bennington 1860-1923 and Ann Gould 1857-1923 (1).

She was married to Charles Adams on 21 April 1904 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Ashbourne. She had the following children:

Jennie Gould. She was born in 1896 at Mootlow Farm, near Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire. On 30 May 1915 she was married to Ernest Alfred Smith, the only son of Matthew Smith of Cheadle in Staffordshire. Jennie Smith died on 17 January 1989, and was buried on 24 January 1989 at Stanton-under-Weaver, Staffordshire

Susan Gould. She was born on 14 March 1900 at Alstonefield, and baptised on 29 June 1900 at home in Dunge Bottom, Alstonefield. She married Frederick Austin Bailey, and they had a daughter. Susan Bailey died on 5 July 1980.

George Edward Gould. He was born in 1902. He married Harriet Fowler of Harpur Hill in Buxton in 1932, and they had two daughters. He died in 1954.

Edith Mary Adams. She was known in the family as “Little Polly”. She was born in 1904 at Standlow Farm in Tissington, Derbyshire, and died there on 2 November 1906. She was buried in Alsop-en-le-dale churchyard (3).

Annie Lizzie Adams. She was born on 4 November 1906 at Standlow Farm, Tissington. She was married to Thomas Walter Askey in 1927. They lived in Buxton in Derbyshire and had a son and daughter. She died on 3 November 1993 in the Buxton Cottage Hospital.

Ada Adams. She was born on 8 December 1911 at Parwich in Derbyshire. She was married to Edward Corden Fearn 1908-1976 at Parwich on 21 April 1930. They lived at Parwich and had three sons and three daughters. Ada Fearn died on 1 October 1989 at the Royal Infirmary in Derby.

Nellie Adams. She was born on 9 April 1915 at Shaw Lane in Parwich. After leaving the village school there she trained at Mayfield and became a teacher. She married Charles Jackson in 1943 and lived at Cauldon Lowe, Froghall, and finally Kingsley, all in Staffordshire. They had two daughters. She died in 1987.

Ellen Bennington Adams died at her home in Parwich in December 1936, and was buried in Parwich churchyard.

(1) She was born on the very date fixed for her parents’ wedding. Hence she kept her mother's maiden name as well as being christened with her father's surname as her second name. The wedding of her parents was postponed until 9 December 1878 when it took place at Grindon church.

The two other girls in the photograph (both from Manchester) are Margaret (Maggie) Gregory [[Mary Gregory’s sister-in-law] on the left and Maggie Gregory's friend Annie Davies on the right. The two youngest daughters of Charles and Ellen Bennington Adams were born after the photograph was taken in 1909, Ada in 1911 and Nellie in 1915.
(3) Her grave in Alsop-en-le-Dale churchyard is unmarked, but is by the roadside wall to the right of the gate looking in from the road.
